Abstract

This presentation will focus on student participation in mathematics education, particularly the question of: What are the implications of different classroom management strategies employed by mathematics teachers for low-achieving students' opportunities for participation in mathematics? My research approach aims to combine general pedagogical considerations with subject didactics in the effort to examine inclusion efforts in mathematics education.

The presentation will include analyses of how different stakeholders debate the causes and necessary actions regarding students who perform poorly in mathematics. A key point is that there is a difference in understanding the problem when discussing students with dyscalculia versus students in general difficulties in mathematics. As an example of how to work on student participation in mathematics, cases from research projects on same-age reciprocal peer tutoring (SYKL: SYstematiseret KLassekammerathjælp) will be presented, where students alternate between being the helper and the one being helped.

Videos and excerpts of student assignments as well as interviews with students, teachers, and supervisors will be shown.
