Abstract

Ärlemalm-Hagsér, Eva & Pramling Samuelsson, Ingrid: Many different genus patterns exist simultaneously in the Swedish pre-school. Pedagogisk Forskning i Sverige, Vol. 14, No. 2, pp. 89–109. The purpose of the article is to illuminate how issues of gender come to expression in the play and learning of the preschool child. The theoretical framework for the analysis consists of Rogoff’s sociocultural perspective on learning and development in combination with a gender perspective. The analyses of video observations aimed at describing qualitatively different ways in which children act and communicate gender issues. The result is presented in four themes generated from the empirical study: separation, constancy, community, and breaking boarders. These themes appear in parallel in the everyday activities of the children. In the discussion of the result, we emphasize the importance of teachers and researchers considering the joint construction of gender in the play and learning activities in preschool. Keywords: early childhood education, gender, play, learning, interaction, develop-mental pedagogy, preschool
